Honda Invests in Ohio Factories

Those who frequent this blog may remember our previous report on how Honda manages to practice zero-waste production in Ohio. The Japanese automaker keeps an eye on everything in the plant so that everything that can be reduced, reused, and recycled is. This practice has not only proven to be popular amongst the eco-conscious, but also among the big decision makers at Honda, as they've recently decided to expand their Ohio production facilities.
This is something that we here at Midlands Honda are thrilled to hear, as it means investing in four plants spread across Ohio, in Troy, East Liberty, Marysville and Anna. The total amount the Honda is planning to invest in these plants totals out to $400-million, and through it they're hoping to make large impact both locally and nationally.
"When they do make expansions and investments, they're permanent," said Tracy Schneiter, VP for automotive research firm IRN Inc. "They're really mindful of the long picture."1
For Honda, looking at the "long picture" means fighting to the best and the worst of times. The Japanese automaker hasn't laid off a single employee since starting production in the seventies in Ohio, and that's just the beginnning. Even after the horrible earthquake and tsunami that forced many parts suppliers to holdback shipments, Honda refused to let their own go without work, allowing them to work in areas of maintenance and volunteering rather than letting them go.
